Job Summary
Full time position, benefit eligible. Under the supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant, Court Security Officer performs work relating to the security of the Geary County District Court. It is the responsibility of this employee to maintain a safe environment within the District Court by monitoring all access to the District Court and checking all individuals for weapons and contraband prior to entering the building. Previous law enforcement or corrections experience is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties described below are indicative of what the District Court Security Officer might be asked to perform. This job is to incorporate any County Resolutions and State Law for court security. This job description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise. This is not a Certified Law Enforcement position and does not have arrest powers.
Court Security. Provides Security to the Geary County District Court House in order to preserve law and order. Provides a safe complex for Judiciary, staff and by overseeing of security procedures for the courthouse. Politely greet and direct all patrons entering and inform them of the screening process. Ensure legally restricted items are logged and stored properly. Conduct security patrols on foot around the courthouse. Report and record any unsafe conditions or suspicious activities. Monitor security cameras. Assists and work with Geary County Deputies and outside agencies when requested. May assist in transports of prisoners to and from the Geary County Detention Center for Court appearances, Dr. Appointments, Court Ordered Commitments, etc, and testify in court on related activities. Completes reports as needed. Inspects equipment for compliance with standards.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED.
Qualify with a department firearm, maintain proficient qualifications and complete all required training.
A valid Kansas driver’s license.
Must reside within a 30 minute radius of worksite within 90 days of employment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and standards.
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals; and warning labels.
EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Ability to operate various types of equipment – standard office equipment, fax, scanner, computer, and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
Other equipment could be required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers, and management.
Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
Ability to develop, interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, SDS sheets, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, etc; and warning labels.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
