Assistant Road & Bridge Supervisor

Location: Junction City, KS

Minimum Rate: $26.89/hour. Actually starting pay dependent upon qualifications

JOB SUMMARY

The job duties of the Assistant Road and Bridge Supervisor include but are not limited to supervise the semi-skilled and skilled equipment operators and laborers in the maintenance and repair of roads and bridges; to supervise crew members in the safe operation of equipment and executing assigned jobs; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public. The Assistant Road and Bridge Supervisor will assume the duties of the Road and Bridge Supervisor in their absence. Performs other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Assistant Road and Bridge Supervisor might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County resolutions for the position of Assistant Road and Bridge Supervisor. Road Maintenance. Performs finished grading operations. Patches road and bridge surfaces using cold or hot mix, overlays and seals asphalt roads. Spreads gravel, sand, rock and asphalt. Performs road and bridge maintenance work such as repairing guardrails, mowing road ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts. Removes snow and ice from roads and bridges. Performs light maintenance and servicing work in connection with the operations of related equipment. Operates equipment and work zone in a safe manner. Pours concrete for public works projects. Performs light mechanical work. Removes limbs, branches and trees when necessary during emergencies.

Supervisory Functions. Supervise staff in planning work, assignment of tasks, evaluation of work performed, preparation of evaluations, administering corrective actions, interviewing and selecting staff, training, ensuring work is done in accordance with safety protocols and recommending employee transfers, promotions, discharge and salary increases. Develop and implement policies as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience of general construction, road and bridge construction and maintenance or related experience.
  • A current Class A Kansas CDL.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of road and bridge construction and maintenance including:
  • Supervision of workers and operators performing such work as repair and resurfacing of roadways
  • Mowing right-of-way
  • Litter and trash clean-up
  • Snow and ice removal
  • Erecting guard rails and traffic signs.
  • Seeding and sodding, cleaning and grading ditches
  • Construction and repairing bridges and culverts
  • Knowledge of road and bridge construction materials and use.
  • Ability to interpret technical data, maps, construction plans, chart and diagrams.
  • Ability to operate all department equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, warning labels, etc.

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Ability to operate various types of office equipment – standard office equipment, computer and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software, etc.
  • Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment I.e. motor grader, crane, tractor, roller, loader, backhoe, oil distributor and other heavy and light construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to use two-way radios, computer, fax machine, measuring tapes, levels, hand tools, power tools, and other machinery.
  • Ability to use GPS and GIS data relating to county landmarks, roads, etc.
  • Other equipment could be required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers and management.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to communicate information and teach and train others regarding policies and processes in both written and verbal form.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.

Work Environment:

  • Works in both an indoor setting as well as outdoors.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather when required.
  • Due to the volume, scope, size of staff and nature of public service this office provides, full-time regular attendance is essential.
